About COVIDES
COVIDES is one of the 193 cooperatives affiliated to PATH2DEA partner FCAC, it is a Cooperative of wine and cava (Sparkling wine) producers located in the Penedès region in Catalonia. Covides ranks first in terms of volume in the production of wine in Catalonia.
COVIDES counts more than 700 active winegrowers who take care of around 2,000 ha spread over more than 40 rural towns in the Penedès region. From these 2000 ha, around 22 percent corresponds to organic production. The cooperative covers all stages of the wine value chain, from farmers to European consumers, favoring the rural development of the region and providing sustainable wine and cava to consumers with more than 65% export rates.
The showcase
COVIDES has carried out various projects based on the use of big data and machine learning technologies to manage variables such as soil map studies, agronomic characteristics of plots, and combine them with historical records of production and ripening control, among other variables, to create predictive models to manage the huge variability implicit in wine production. The predictive models have been used to improve harvest predictions and anticipate the information required from harvest in order to optimize resource investment and technical team dedication in the improvement of harvest yield for wine production.
Some of the projects in which the participation of COVIDES was useful for its digital transformation were OrGeVine and CoopVitiLoop.
In the OrGeVine project, wireless sensors were used to measure the temperature and humidity of the soil and the environment, among other relevant parameters for the growth of the grape and the efficient management of vineyards. With CoopVitiLoop, the implementation of organic composting was used to close the cycle of local organic materials in the cooperative wine sector.
